For extra enrichment, field trips, class At Elmira Community Nursery School, we believe that children learn best in an environment that is warm & welcoming. We encourage a sense of belonging by fostering connection among children, parents and staff. We place a high priority on community by encouraging friendships, recognizing and valuing each other's feelings as well as learning how to problem solve with one another. When a child feels safe, secure and that they belong, learning comes alive. The foundation of our program is rooted in play-based, inquiry led learning opportunities. We encourage children’s curiosity with leading and open-ended questions and materials. Activities, toys and books are curated based on the children’s interests.

How Does Learning Happen – Ontario’s pedagogy for the early years. The focus of this document is on four foundations that are important for children’s early years development: belonging, wellbeing, engagement & expression. This document is also the basis of full day kindergarten programming in elementary school.

“Children are competent, capable of complex thinking, curious, and rich in potential. They grow up in families with diverse social, cultural, and linguistic perspectives. Every child should feel that he or she belongs, is a valuable contributor to his or her surroundings, and deserves the opportunity to succeed. When we recognize children as capable and curious, we are more likely to deliver programs and services that value and build on their strengths and abilities.”
